Medication Safety and Pain Management in General Practice

Chronic pain clinics across Australia say the main focus point for the education of health professions is around medication safety in terms of pain medication. There are not any medications that stop pain immediately once the pain has been present for more than three months – but most patients are put on strong opioid medications for this pain.
There is not enough peer reviewed research to suggest that these types of medications help beyond the short-term (three months or less). Often the evidence suggests that it in fact causes adverse affects after this time such as depression, lower testosterone levels in males and constipation.
After time, the body becomes tolerant of these medications meaning that you need to take more medication to feel the same effect therefore leading to medication dependence.
If you’d like to discuss pain management, please make an appointment with your GP.
